Friendship cake
By Letecia Suarez Orendain

Say the word “cake” and you conjure visions of decadent pleasure.

It is a word associated with feasting, loving, carrying a child, fostering friendship and even healing—-in short, life itself, because these five are life’s recurrent themes.

A cake is something you run to when you feel sorry for yourself, knowing it won’t fail in its job to cheer you up. What’s more, it doesn’t contradict you or give you a sermon.

You would not link cakes with The Amish, who are an Anabaptist Christian denomination found primarily in the United States.

As a sign of decorum, their women are wrapped in drab clothing that cover every inch of skin, and their men wear dark suits and hats.

The Amish people are known for restrictions on the use of modern devices, such as cars and telephones, and any kind of revelry. So how can the Amish Friendship Cake be so devilishly good?

My friend Violy, who sent me this recipe, was nonplused as to the reason but who cares how or why. This wonderful recipe might as well be our recipe for the season.

Bake it as your hope for a friendlier world, that even as you slice the portions, the partakers are united in a common task all done in peace.

You can even bake it as your commemoration of the 9/11 attacks (for the Sept. 11, 2001 series of coordinated suicide terrorist attacks upon the United States, predominantly targeting civilians). The cake has many elements that are sweet, the very taste to look for when you are caught up in an upheaval. Serve the cake as your sign of unity with those who lost loved ones.

Making a cake takes time, a logical allusion to building friendships and carrying a child. These two can’t be rushed and like making a cake, they need a measure of love. It requires patience, dedication and unselfish intentions.

The Amish Friendship Cake is a lovely tradition to embrace, not just as a calling card for Christmas, which is three months away, but also as a thanksgiving for being alive.

Do it for the decadent pleasure it offers and the happiness you can share with your friends. It is a special recipe; maybe even of life.
