Councilor criticizes Mayor Soc
An independent Talisay City councilor criticized local officials for showing lack of concern in last weeks two shootings linked to the adopted son of Mayor Socrates Fernandez.
Councilor Alan Bucao, in a privilege speech last Thursday, asked Talisay residents to unite to make their city peaceful.
“I could have chosen to keep quiet like what other city officials are doing. But I cannot allow this to happen to my family, my sons or the sons and daughters of my fellow Talisaynons whom I have sworn to protect and serve faithfully. Talisaynons, let us rise and assert our rights for a peaceful and safe environment,” Bucao said during the City Council’s regular session last Thursday.
Bothered
Bucao said he was bothered by the two shooting incidents that killed jeepney driver Panfilo Barinque and badly wounded his helper Timoteo Aleo and two other victims in Barangays Cansojong and Dumlog.
Two of the victims had identified Mayor Fernandez’s 23-year-old adopted son, Joavan, as the gunman. Joavan, they said, shot them for no apparent reason with a .45 pistol.
Joavan, who is out on bail, faces two frustrated murder complaints and a murder case.
Although he did not mention the mayor’s name and Joavan’s, Bucao lambasted Fernandez for allegedly “covering and clearing” his son despite the latter’s alleged previous brushes with the law.
“I could not believe that for someone who has been looked up to by Talisaynons, he continues cleaning his son’s bad deeds...the same person who has allowed his son to get away from the crimes all these years,” Bucao said.
Incidents
Bucao was referring to the mayor’s son and the string of incidents blamed on him, including the running over of a small boy in Sitio Sawsawan, Barangay San Roque by a speeding government vehicle; the indiscriminate firing at a cargo truck at a Mall; illegally collecting from sand and gravel extractors; and abusing the use of government vehicles and facilities.
Bucao reminded Fernandez that he is not only the father of his son but more importantly, “he is the father of more than 150,000 Talisaynons.”
The veteran legislator also called on his colleagues in the council to do their part to ensure good governance and not to be cowed by “unprincipled and irresponsible officials.” (GC)
