Quisumbing: ‘I will talk with intelligent people’

Businessman Norberto Quisumbing Jr. is open to talking with Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano on the conflict between his company and the City Government.

However, he will do it on one condition.

“I’m always open provided I talk with intelligent people. I don’t want to waste my time. We just might go into a shouting match and he will just use language that is not appropriate,” Quisumbing said in an interview yesterday.

Rep. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz (Cebu, 6th district) has offered to mediate in the conflict between Ouano and Quisumbing, who wants to pull his businesses out of Mandaue City.

The mayor welcomes the offer, saying he wants to know why Quisumbing finds the City “unfriendly” to investors.

Quisumbing added that before talks with Ouano take place, ground rules must be set first.

Language

“He might use language that is not acceptable to us. If that’s it, then I’ll walk out. It has to be done by people who are fully backed with information and legal support,” he said.

In an earlier interview, Quisumbing said his company will move outside Mandaue and transfer to its plant in Compostela town because of the “wrong kind of environment” in Mandaue.

He even invited other business establishments “who are scared” to move out and transfer to other towns and cities where the local governments are friendly.

Ouano later issued a press statement and said that the City will remain business-friendly.

Quisumbing said yesterday that it is “hard” to do business in Mandaue. The statement, he said, describes the situation his people have encountered in dealing with the City.

He added that in Lapu-Lapu City, his company can make transactions in one day.

Quisumbing said that in Mandaluyong City, where their Luzon office is based, transactions with the local government are easy.
This is in contrast to things in Mandaue City, where it is “difficult” to do business.

“Since he (Ouano) became mayor, a new culture has developed in Mandaue. A culture of making life difficult for people they don’t like,” he said. (AAG)
