Los Jefes targets 2nd title in PAL Intersports caging
The Philippine Airlines (PAL) Intersports basketball champions, Los Jefes de Cebu, are ready to defend their crown when the 29th edition of the event blasts off this Sept. 15-17 in General Santos City.
Bannered by former players in the PBL and in the Cebu commercial and collegiate leagues, the Los Jefes dribblers are looking to snatch their second-straight championship title since winning the plum last year by toppling erstwhile champions, Los Hermanos de Heneral Santos, 61-48, at the Iloilo City Sports Complex.
The Los Jefes de Cebu, though, will be facing a tougher challenge ahead as they will be playing at the homecourt of Los Hermanos de Heneral Santos.
Heading the list of the Cebuanos are ex-SWU Cobras Misael Arias, Remberto Lawas (who also played for UV), Geno Mario Naron, Esteban Cesar Ortega, Enrico Espinosa, and Joseph Paul Maninang.
Also in the roster, which will be skippered by Chester Cokaliong, are CEC legend Zotico Tan and erstwhile University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars Gilbert Gajudo, Reynaldo Abarquez, and Christopher Cabaltera while Julius Gastador, an ex-CCC Aguila (now UC Webmasters) stalwart, will complete the list.
In line with their upcoming title defense, the Los Jefes, which has as coach ex-PBA player Mark Anthony Tallo, has scheduled a tune-up match against newly crowned Executives Cup champion San Carlos Boys High Alumni Basketball Association (Scbhaba) tomorrow at 1 pm at the City Sports Club-Cebu gym.
The Scbhaba will be headed by reinforcements John Andrew Auza, Arturo Pepito Mata, and Enjel James Sievert.
Before the tune-up game, a free throw shooting contest,two-ball competition and three-point shootout will be staged.
The entries in the free throw shooting contest are Dean Wong, Misael Arias, Clive Monsanto, Zotico Tan, Edwin Banaag and Remberto Lawas.
Vying for the two-ball plum are the tandems Banaag/Sepe, Cokaliong/Tan, Monsanto/Diaz, Lawas/Maninang, Zanoria/Villamor and Arias/Gastador.
Cokaliong, Paul Abais, Virgil Pua, Enrico Espinosa, Jonathan Diaz, and Geno Mario Naron make up the competitors in the 3-point showdown. (JSV)
