Bata weaves $500T magic By Mike Limpag Sun.Star Staff Reporter
EFREN "Bata" Reyes survived dry breaks, two missed shots on the eights and a controversial foul to score the biggest win in his career, after an 8-6 triumph over Rodney Morris in the International Pool Tour World 8-Ball Championships in Reno, Nevada.
The win, which saw both players failing to make a ball in 10 racks, earned for the Magician $500,000 (P25,276,000) for 10 days’ work, while Morris settled for $150,000.
“I missed two eight balls, I think, but they were both corner pockets. It makes me feel nervous when I'm shooting that, I'm shaking a little. That's why I missed the eights,” Reyes told internationalpooltour.com after the win.
Distinction
Reyes now has the distinction of having won three of the four biggest prizes in pool history.
In 2001, Reyes earned $163,172 for topping the Tokyo 9-Ball Open and in November 2005 earned $200,000 in the IPT King of the Hill challenge, just months after an unceremonious exit in the World Pool championships prodded talks on Reyes' retirement.
He also won the 2004 World 8-Ball Championship in Dubai.
Reyes and Morris, who also faced off in the World Cup finals last month, had problems early with their break with neither able to drop a ball in the first five racks.
Miss
Morris finally dropped a ball on his break for a 4-2 score but three more dry breaks leveled the count at 5.
Reyes seemed headed to a one-rack lead before missing a shot on the eight. Morris opted to play safe and hid the eight behind two balls before Reyes went one rail to drop the eight, impressive the audience.
However, the shot was disallowed as the referee called a foul.
The lucky break had Morris up, 5-6, but it was the last rack he took as the Magician took the next three racks.
