Exporters ask help of Luzon lawmaker
The Philippine Exporters Confederation Inc. Cebu (Philexport Cebu) has asked the help of Rep. Junie Cua of Quirino Province to bring to Congress the organization’s stand on the Anti-Smuggling Bill.
Philexport Cebu said in a statement that Cua, who is also the chairman of trade and industry committee of the House of Representatives, promised to help Cebu exporters.
While vacationing in Cebu recently, Cua met with local exporters.
Exporters have objected to certain provisions in the bill, which is being reviewed by the Senate ways and means committee.
Philexport president Sergio Ortiz-Luis Jr. said provisions in the law, which disallow exporters from posting surety bonds to be able to withdraw their imported materials from bonded warehouses, are anti-exporters.
The anti-smuggling bill requires exporters to pay in cash the taxes and duties of their raw material imports upon arrival.
“All are additional costs. If these items in the law are not scrapped, all exporters will have to pay advanced taxes for imports that are supposed to be tax-free. They can only get their money when they file their taxes the following year,” Ortiz-Luis said.
The law will have adverse impact especially on small and medium exporters, he said. (JBN)
