Serna: Mega success
By Roger Serna
Sounds and images

Those who have not seen Sharon Cuneta’s concert last weekend must know by now that it was a well-attended and very successful show. The megastar succeeded in “entertaining” the discriminating Cebu crowd, especially her diehard followers.

Sharon’s guest performer, Christian Bautista, also did his share and performed duets with the megastar. Aside from the Sharonian from Carcar, who won the ABS-CBN promo having in possession the most number of Sharon memorabilia and whom the megastar gifted with a Sony Wega television, another Cebuano was also a recipient of Sharon’s generosity.

Designer Jed Sevilla (an avowed Sharonian and who went out of his way to attend the press conference, held two days before the show, just to see his idol up close and personal for the first time) was commissioned by Sharon to present his designs to her before the show so she could select at least two for her TV show.

When asked why she came too early for the show, she said that she wanted to relax the entire day immediately before the show. So while her husband, Sen. Kiko Pangilinan and their children were unwinding in a resort, she’d be spending the time sleeping or just doing nothing.

Sharon was one interviewee who didn’t need much coaxing nor motivation to satisfy the interviewer. For a single question, she gives kilometric answers. “Pang five pages,” she confirmed.

For the nth time, Sharon made known her decision to stay away from politics.

As to how she has kept her feet firmly on the ground, despite her celebrity status, she credits it to her upbringing. She also confessed that her father was once a poor fellow.

She credits all the things she’s enjoying to God and sees His hands working in her life every day; adding that she “doesn’t want to be preachy and hates being one but there is no other way to talk about God.”

Although she said it’s never too late for anyone to go back to school (she’s into UP’s open academy taking Philosophy), she said finishing school before having a family is most ideal as there is no need to divide one’s time in both concerns.

She always loved going to school and stressed that she left school because she got married and not because she’s into making movies. She’s scheduled to make four movies, two with Star Cinema: One in a co-production between Star Cinema and Unitel and the last under GMA Films.

She credits her ABS-CBN bosses for her being able to maintain her close relationship with GMA 7 people. The GMA Films project is not with Robin Padilla, she emphasized. Sorry, folks.

Oh, she feels “upset” over the plan of having her movie Dear Heart and her other projects remade. She was mum on the conversion of Bituing Walang Ningning into a teleseries.

She also plans to tour her Sharon show around the country and Cebu is surely in the list. She’s always overwhelmed by the Cebuanos’ warmth.

On daughter KC’s personal life, she describes the latter’s type of man as more on intelligence than mere good looks. Sharon joked that if she’s made to choose the man for KC, it would be Prince William.

She described herself as a good mother-in-law and that her requirement for her future son-in-law is the ability to fit well with the family. Sharon also revealed that KC doesn’t go for the traditional ligaw, unlike her who is more old-fashioned in a lot of ways.

Sharon could have gone talking enthusiastically about many other things had not the organizers signaled that time was up. Exceptional interview subject indeed.

This Sunday, a “re-engineered” Karansa Festival will be held in the main thoroughfares of Danao City as the local government unit celebrates its annual fiesta in honor of Sto. Tomas de Villanueva.

It’s “re-engineered” in the sense that it is now doing away with the Latin-inspired choreography the festival used to be identified with. It will still have ruffles and some similar stuff in the costumes but the dance steps will be more reflective of the history, culture and people of the northeastern city.

Happy fiesta and more power!

Although yours truly did not actually see the original Bakekang movie (not that I want to hide my real age), starring Nora Aunor, but this I can say: based on the publicity photos, the prosthetics applied on the superstar’s face was more impressive than what is given to Sunshine Dizon for the movie remake.

Nora’s make-up then succeeded in hiding Nora’s distinctive and recognizable
features, thus making her a separate entity; unlike that of Sunshine’s which is only “uglified” the young actress and thus, still recognizable.

As to the beauty of the two films, that’s for moviegoers to judge for themselves.
