Pinoys gun for sweep of Asian 9-ball tour

After topping the International Pool Tour World 8-Ball Championships last week, Efren “Bata” Reyes will try to defend his title in the San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Jakarta leg set to kick off today at Jakarta, Indo-nesia.

Reyes and the other Pinoy stars are hoping to sweep this year’s four legs of the 9-Ball tour.

Reyes won the first leg in Vietnam, Ramil Gallego took the Bangkok edition, and Rodolfo Luat won the Taiwan stop.

Reyes and the other two champions will see action today, together with Francisco Bustmante, Reyes’ partner in the World Cup of Pool win.

Mixed fortunes

Bustmante has had mixed fortunes in the San Miguel Tour, as he has rarely managed to qualify for the quarterfinal round.

However, his recent performance in the World 8-Ball Championships, where he strung up 18 straight wins, might spell the difference this time.

The Magician is in Group 2, together with Yang Ching Shun of Taiwan and Roy Apancho, while Bustamante is in Group 3 with Wang Hung Hsiang and Li He Wen.

Luat is in Group 5 with Amnuayporn Chotipong and Indonesia’s Alwi.

On the other hand, Gallego will play Japan’s Masaaki Tanaka and Apsi Chaniago. Only the top player in each group will advance to the quarterfi-nal round.

The winner in the Jakarta Leg will pocket $10,000 and valuable points in the Order of Merit, with the top 10 earning automatic slots for the World Pool Championships in November in Manila. (ML)
