Espinoza tops Chairman’s Cup Class C; Purcia takes 2nd spot

Atty.. Ellie Espinoza bested 11 others when he shot a round of 187 to take the championship trophy during the two-day Chairman’s Cup Class C tournament at the Mactan Island Golf Club on Sept. 15-17.

Guilbert Purcia took the first runner-up trophy with 188, while Dominador Bartolata finished third with a two-day total of 191.

Birdie

In the opening day, Espinoza, who writes a column for Sun.Star Cebu, set the pace with a birdie from the sand trap on the first hole. He went on to finish with a 48 in the front nine and cruised with a 46 in the final nine holes, after scoring another birdie in the 12th hole.

It was the same story in the second day as Espinoza scored a 93 on two birdies. He sizzled hot in the front nine with a 44, bolstered by a birdie in the fifth hole.

Espinoza capped the day with a 49 in the back nine after birdieing the 13th hole.

On the other hand, Purcia struggled with a 97 in the first day, as he started the day with a disappointing 50 in the first nine holes, but sizzled with a 91 in the final day to take the second place.

Bartolata opened with a 95, 47 in front and 48 at back nine, during the first day. On the second day, he shot a 96 to take third place.

Maj. Gen. Jaime M. Viernes, Jr., MIGC chairman, awarded the championship trophy to Espinoza and prizes to Purcia and Bartolata at the clubhouse last Sunday afternoon. (PR)
