Milo swimmers head for Iligan

After successful stints in the Milo Little Olympics, Cebuano tankers are off to another competition this weekend—the 15th Iligan City Aqua Swimming Association National Age Group Championship.

Coach Rolando Alvarez of the Cebu City Blue Marlins Swimming Club will bring along 25 of his top swimmers to compete in 14 age divisions. The team seeks to improve its second-place finish last year.

Paula Vega of University of Cebu will lead the powerhouse cast. Vega, who collected four gold medals in last weekend's Milo Little Olympics, will be competing in the 13-14 years old age class.

UC's boys' team, which won in two relay events in Milo, will also be taking part of the action.

Gian Carlo Bagano will compete in the boy's 13-14 group, while teammates Michael David Vega, Noel Cañeda and Jeffrey Yana will be the bets in the 15-17 class. Yana won two other golds in the 200-meter breaststroke and 100-meter butterfly. Also competing in the same group is Matheus Cesar Galo.

National Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) gold medalist Andrew Bequiña and silver winner Antonio Yana Jr. will compete in the Open bracket.

Last year's outstanding athlete in the Iligan swimfest Lee Ann Navarro, a seven-year-old swimmer of Cebu Eastern College, will be making a comeback this year, while Milo 200-meter freestyle gold winner Trina Cañeda of UC will compete in the 9-10 bracket.

The other players in the boys' class are King Navarro (6-under), Don Bosco's Anthony Navarro (7-8), Bethany Christian School's Jonjon Cabados and Samsam Cabados (9-10), Guadalupe Elementary School's Kevin Alvarez, and UC’s Edward Daryll Belleza (11-12).

Distaff side swimmers include Subangdaku's Beth May Arellano, UC's Daniel May Ballesteros (7-8), St. Francis' Patricia Mae Baguio (9-10), and Mary Arlette Valler (15-17). Coach Alvarez is trying to tap Dianne Cañeda in the Open division, but she is yet to confirm. (MCB)
