Son of ‘pusher’ repeats rap kin paid cops
The son of a suspected big-time drug pusher was arrested yesterday, reviving an earlier report about some policemen getting involved in extortion.
Manny “Manik” Regis, 30, son of drug pushing suspect Epifras “Pepe” Regis, was arrested by operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) 7 at 11:30 a.m. in Garden Bloom Subdivision, Barangay Pitogo, Consolacion, Cebu.
The operatives led by Chief Insp. Fermin Armendarez III arrested Manny by virtue of a warrant of arrest for drugs issued by Judge Silvestre A. Maamo of the Regional Trial Court Branch 17.
No bail was recommended.
In an interview with Sun.Star Cebu yesterday, Manny revived the earlier claim of his mother Gloria Regis, 57, against some members of the Provincial Anti-Illegal Drug Special Operations Task Force (PAIDSOTF) of the Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO), who allegedly extorted P500,000 cash.
Manny’s parents Epifras and Gloria were arrested last July 19 by a joint team of the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Bureau (CIIB) and the Vice Control Section (VCS).
It was upon their arrest that Gloria told the media of the alleged extortion activities of some policemen from the CPPO as well as those assigned at the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO).
The money, which the family reportedly raised, was given in exchange for lowering the quantity of drugs taken from Manny’s house so he would still be eligible for bail.
Manny was referring to the raid of the PAIDSOTF last May in his house in Barangay San Vicente, Liloan, Cebu, where he was arrested.
He said he and his father Epifras were the subjects of the search warrant but he was the only one arrested during the operation.
While his mother only mentioned SPO1 Raymund Enriquez, Manny yesterday also named two other policemen in the alleged extortion.
Sun.Star Cebu is withholding the names of the two policemen pending their comments.
Enriquez, in an earlier interview, denied the allegation, saying it was just meant to besmirch his name and his profession.
Manny said that the policemen hid him from the media. He said he was first detained in Consolacion town and later transferred to Talisay City.
“Gitaguan gyud ko nila kay aron dili masakpan sa media (They kept me hidden so that the media will not find out about the arrest),” he said.
Manny said the three policemen negotiated with his mother on how the money will be delivered.
After his mother’s sister-in-law handed over the P500,000 cash to the policemen, Manny said a drug case was still filed against him but for a much lesser offense, where he was able to post a bail bond of P200,000.
In yesterday’s operation, SPO3 Reynaldo Matillano, one of the arresting operatives, said Manny’s arrest was made after an asset told him about the man’s whereabouts.
Knowing Manny has a standing arrest warrant for drugs, Matillano said he coordinated with the VCS to get a copy of the warrant.
At 11:30 a.m., the CIDG 7 caught up with Manny at the vicinity of the subdivision, aboard a car.
Matillano said Manny did not resist but tried to hide at the back seat.
Manny also told Sun.Star Cebu the family was into the illegal drug business. “Mao na gyud na among linya (That’s our line of work),” Manny said.
Manny said he is helping out his parents in the drug distribution in Cebu. He said he earns as much as P90,000 per week on his own. This means he can dispose an equivalent of 25 grams a week. (JST)
