Traders honor controversial general
A group of businessman awarded controversial retired general Jovito Palparan Wednesday for stopping insurgents’ extortion of traders and helping restore investor confidence on the economy.
Palparan has been accused by cause-oriented groups of rights violations in his anti-insurgency campaign.
The National Alliance of Filipino Businessmen (NAFB) gave Palparan its first Gawad Pandayan ng Kalooban award.
“This is in appreciation for Gen. Palparan’s efforts of opening the business opportunities where the areas of terrorism has caused damaged to small and medium enterprises (SMEs),” NAFB national secretary-general Hendric Hermida said.
He said the group is grateful to Palparan for his efforts to protect the business sector from rebels demanding “revolutionary taxes.”
In accepting the award, Palparan encouraged businessmen not give in to the demands of rebels, even when they are threatened.
NAFB, whose headquarters is based in Cebu, said it has 84,000 individual affiliates nationwide.
The group said it was formed to protect the interests of local SMEs. (MMM)
