UC racks up 4 gold medals in table tennis

The University of Cebu (UC) paddlers raked in four gold medals yesterday in the secondary division of the Cesafi table tennis tournament at Hua Ching Foundation in Cabangcalan, Mandaue City.

The feat made them closer to another 7-gold medal sweep this year in the Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) event, with three more medals at stake as of press time yesterday.

UC's lady paddlers swept all gold medals at stake in the secondary girls category from the singles, doubles and team play events.

UC's girls team shut out the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) 3-0, in three games of the team finals.

The UC girls team is composed of Elonna Dana Tormis, Angelie Motel, Jennifer Jacalan and Candy Babalcon, while USJ-R has Tifanny Francia, Carmela Anne Jueza, Lezyl Bayang and Mabelle Kaye Agbon.

In the doubles finals, UC's tandem of Jacalan and Babalcon trounced USJ-R's twosome of Francia and Bayang, 11-4, 11-4, 11-3.

Tormis, on the other hand, made short work of Jueza, 11-8, 11-6, 11-6 in the singles finals.

Rally

Jueza set a rally from a four-all tie that went to a three deadlocks at 6-all in the last set.

From that point, Tormis went all out for the lead, which was never threatened all the way to victory.

UC's boys secondary team, powered by 11th Milo Little Olympics most valuable athlete Geofrey Apas, grabbed the fourth gold medal after finishing a clean 2-0 win-loss card in the round robin format tournament.

"If we swept all gold medals again it will be our 10th straight medal haul this year," said UC head coach Jessica Honoridez.

Meanwhile, UC's collegiate paddlers vie today for their sixth straight over-all title in table tennis.
