Zoom beats Skyblazers, 90-86

Zoom Remit kept the lone collegiate squad, SCSIT Skyblazers, winless with a heart-stopping 90-86 win in the Open division of the Talisay City Mayor’s Cup 2006 basketball tournament, Wednesday at the new Talisay city sports complex.

Shifty point guard Totong Villanueva carried Zoom Remit to victory over the Skyblazers, who are using the tournament as a gauge of their performance in preparation for the Visayas Amateur Athletic Association (VAAA) basketball wars.

The Skyblazers, though, didn’t hand the victory easily to Zoom Remit as they kept the game close for three quarters before unraveling in the payoff canto.

Penultimate

The Skyblazers’ last taste of the lead came at the end of the penultimate period, where they led Zoom Remit, 70-65.

Zoom Remit’s chance of breaking the game wide open came in the fourth period, after Dodong Villanueva and Leon Floro Eleazar spearheaded a Zoom offensive blitz that allowed them to outscore the Skyblazers in the period, 25-16, to secure their second win in three outings.

Youthful

Villanueva scored a total of 24 points including 11 in the third, while Eleazar added nine for Zoom, which handed the youthful SCSIT squad their third-straight loss.

San Roque, meanwhile, leaned on Chard Pepito’s 22-point production in copping their second win in three games via an 86-78 drubbing of Cansojong in the seniors division.

It was Cansojong’s second loss in two games.

Defending champion, Lagtang, on the other hand, came out as the only team yet to be beaten after Kenneth Alfred Caparida scattered a total of 20 points in leading the team to an emphatic 87-74 win over the erstwhile undefeated team, Bulacao, in the SK Division.
