Sunday, September 24, 2006 Talk back: Bolo wrong on population By Butch G. Arcenal Bogo, Cebu
It is unfortunate that Provincial Board member Juan Bolo has fallen for the overpopulation myth peddled by population control freaks (Sun.Star Cebu, Sept. 10, 2006).
Contrary to the claim of Mr. Bolo, the present birth rate in the country is not 2.3 percent but 1.9 percent, which is below the replacement level of 2.1 percent.
Practically all the other countries in the world have below-replacement-levels of fertility. Thus, in the decades to come the real problem that will confront societies is a birth dearth, not the so-called population explosion.
I am not saying that couples should have as many offspring as possible. What I am saying is that couples should shun contraception, which fosters an anti-child mentality that hurts society in the long run.
Look at what is now happening in the West, where countries have to “import” immigrants in order to sustain the populations.
