CG stops 39 ferries from leaving Cebu

WARY as tropical storm Milenyo approached, the Cebu Coast Guard yesterday restricted 39 passenger vessels from leaving the Cebu port, particularly those bound for Leyte and Samar.

Petty Officer 1 John Barrera said the restriction on vessels that weigh under 1,000 gross tons remains in effect, until the weather bureau lifts the storm signal for the Visayas.

Northern Cebu is under signal number one, together with the southern part of Leyte, northern Iloilo, Antique, Aklan and Capiz, as the tropical storm intensified while moving closer to Sorsogon.

Samar is under storm signal number three, while Leyte and Biliran Island are under signal number two.

Milenyo is expected to cross Camarines this morning. As of 4 p.m. yesterday, it was hovering over Albay and moved at 50 kilometers per hour.

It packs winds of 130 kph near the center and gusts of up to 160 kph.

The seas off northern Cebu will be rough and fishers are advised to stay ashore.

A bulletin from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration advised residents living in low-lying and mountainous areas to stay alert against flashfloods and landslides. (AIV)
