Check’s buyer spells trouble for cops

THE man who encashed the P40,000 check issued by Joseph Yu, one of the men caught and charged when the Mandaue shabu lab was raided and closed, has surfaced.

Reynaldo Macias, a resident of Barangay Tisa, Cebu City, said the check was given to him for rediscounting by Francis Mutuc, a sales agent for a company that sells bunker fuel at Pier 3.

He executed an affidavit, subscribed by Assistant City Prosecutor Eulogio Borres Jr. last Monday, saying he had “nothing to do with the stealing of said check.”

His only participation, he stressed, was buying the check from Mutuc for P36,000 and depositing the check in his account, a transaction that earned him P4,000 as profits.

Lawyer Vicente Fernandez III said the affidavit proves that the accused in the case were indeed unceremoniously divested of their valuables after the arrest.

“The check was given for rediscounting to Macias when all of the accused were already under police custody,” he said.

Fernandez, representing accused Liu Bo and Tao Fei, expressed his intent to bring the matter to the attention of the court.

While it was not part of the testimony of any of the prosecution’s witnesses and, as such, cannot be discussed as a direct part of the proceedings, Fernandez said it is crucial to include this in the record.

Fernandez first revealed the incident during the cross-examination of prosecution witness Adzhar Albani, a colonel of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency who led one of the two teams that conducted the raid. (KNR)
