Thursday, September 28, 2006 Lapu police gets vehicles, radios; trainees to receive allowance soon
LEGWORK for an international summit in December has meant not only added pressure on the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office, but also more logistical and personnel support, both from the PNP Regional Office (PRO) 7 and the local government.
At 618, the city has the biggest number of visiting policemen who are in town for their field training program (FTP) and to form part of the security for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit.
Most of the heads of state who will be attending the Asean summit will be staying in Lapu-Lapu City, confirmed PRO 7 Director Silverio Alarcio Jr.
On loan
Police Chief Louie Oppus also explained that among the three host cities, Lapu-Lapu has the smallest number of organic police personnel.
This week, the station received two Toyota Altis cars, in addition to the three delivered last week, on loan from the PRO 7.
The City Government also turned over five new Toyota Innova vans to the station, said Oppus, apart from 50 handheld radios and seven base radio sets.
A couple of months ago, the station got four motorcycles, also on loan, from the regional office.
Before all these new vehicles came, the City worked with 11 vehicles distributed to different stations, the Special Weapons and Tactics team and the special units.
The police will also receive part of the P10 million taken from the City’s calamity funds, to pay for the allowances of the FTP personnel and other Asean-related preparations.
More funds
The chairman of the council committee on peace and order, Councilor Damian Gomez, assured that if the amount is not enough for the increasing number of FTP operatives, the council will look for more funds.
Of the P10 million, some P2 million was allocated for the allowances of 500 FTP operatives, at P1,000 per month, for four months. (OCP)
