Thursday, September 28, 2006 Speak Out: Vendors and trisikad drivers By Alexes Evangelista and Aileen Theresa Tatierra Larmen de Guia Memorial College
WHY are vendors and trisikads proliferating in the port of Cebu? Perhaps, vendors and trisikad drivers have found there a place to earn a living.
But these people also cause chaos in the port, especially during the arrivals and departures of ships. They block the way and delay the passengers.
Clearing the port of vendors and trisikads is therefore good for the passengers. They should not be allowed to enter the area.
Also, it will eliminate the threat of snatchers and robbers. There are vendors who help robbers flee or give them shelter.
The use of vendors’ stalls in the sidewalks for residential purpose is also a problem because the port area is a dangerous place. Ten-wheeler trucks and cargo handling equipment often pass there.
The Cebu Port Authority, together with the Cebu City Government and the National Government, should therefore clear the port of vendors and trisikad drivers, relocate their families and provide them with alternative sources of livelihood.
