Thursday, September 28, 2006 Cegba goes hi-tech to even playing field
IN A bid to professionalize cockfighting, the Cebu Game Fowl Breeders Associaiton (Cegba) will use a computer program for their coming derby at the Galleria de Mandaue.
According to Ernesto Urgello, one of the Cegba directors, they obtained the program from the National Federation of Game Fowl Breeders.
“The birds are matched according to their weight, and if not, according to the closest weight,” said Urgello.
Urgello said this is to avoid bias or to “fix” a match under the old system, where the breeders get to choose their own opponents.
“Here, even brothers or friends will face each other,” he said.
The group doesn’t give much emphasis on betting as they are more concerned with breeding.
“What the breeder aspires for is its toughness, cutting ability, stamina and power, not the bets,” he said.
Aside from the weight, request to fight early or last, will also not be entertained.
“After the entries are submitted, they are allowed three consensual requests,” said Urgello.
The fights are also sequenced such that the breeder will have at least seven fights between his entries.
40 thousand
The group will have a three-stag elimination on Oct. 3 to 5, and a two stag semifinals on Oct. 6 and another three-stag championships on Oct. 7.
On Oct. 20 and 21, they will also hold a 5-Stag clean up derby and the breeders who registers the most number of wins in both derbies will be declared the Breeder of the Year and will bring home P40,000 as well as media mileage in a cockfighting related magazine and show. (ML)
