Go find sponsors, POC tells 3 sports

MANILA—The Philippine Olympic Committee yesterday tasked the national sports association for softball, baseball and water polo to look for sponsors so they can be included in the RP delegation in the 15th Asian Games on Dec. 1 to 15 in Doha, Qatar.

POC president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco said they are still hoping for support from the private sector to help finance Team Philippines’ participation in the quadrennial games.

The number of officials, athletes and coaches, who will join Team Philippines has already reached 399, some 50 more than the ones sent in Busan, South Korea in 2002.

Huge expenses

“We told all the three team sports to look for their sponsors to help defray the huge expenses,” said Cojuangco during the POC general assembly meeting at the Milk Way in Makati City.

Philippine Sports Commissioner and deputy Chief of Mission Richie Garcia said the government sports agency has only limited the Asian Games paticipation budget to only P30 million.

“As for us, that’s only what we can give. If it goes beyond that, it’s up to the POC now,” said Garcia. (FCC)
