Map earnings plunge due to delay in supplies
DELAYS in the delivery of supplies caused the sales of Cebu City maps to drop, the Management Information and Computer Services (Mics) reported.
City Councilor Jocelyn Pesquera earlier asked Mics to explain the reduced map sales, which she observed after the map’s posting in the Cebu City Government website.
Mics officer-in-charge William Artajo said supplies for printing the maps have not yet arrived.
Requests are still pending at the General Services Office.
Last year, the City just earned P29,119 for the sales of maps. In 2004, it collected P57,392; 2003, P51,679; 2002, P67,264; 2001, P70,040.40; and 2000, P32,494.
Since 1996, the City earned P402,846 in selling maps.
Gil Sanchez, who takes charge of map print-outs, said line maps, or those showing road networks, barangay boundaries, creeks, rivers, and landmarks, are sold at P25 to P435 depending on the size.
Zoning maps that are 36 inches in width and 50 inches in length are slightly more expensive at P800 because more color shadings are needed to delineate classification like commercial, industrial, and residential zones.
Details
Sanchez said that aside from selling maps, Mics also provides maps to other government offices for free.
Artajo said the city maps available on-line lack details that interested buyers usually look for, thus its posting in the City website has not actually affected sales.
“Maps requested by walk-in customers are more detailed types of maps like lot parcel maps, road network maps, site maps, and maps of specific areas in Cebu City,” he said.
“The maps posted on the website since 2001 were merely barangay maps showing barangay boundaries and major road networks and lack details normally requested by customers,” he also said.
Besides, Artajo added, map sales are seasonal. He cited as example the P70,000 earned in 2001 that consultancy firm Schema Konsult, Inc. paid for maps it ordered.
Sanchez likewise said that lack of supplies resulted in lost opportunities.
He said there was an instance when a client ordered a big map, but settled for a smaller one because no material was available. (RHM)
