Man kills employer who offered sardines

A STAY-IN WORKER who was hired just three days earlier stabbed to death his employer who was offering him a can of sardines to eat.

Elmer Lato Enriquez, 32, of Sitio Langlang, Barangay Cogon Cruz, Danao City, was found bathed in blood on the floor of his warehouse in Barangay Taboc Sunday afternoon.

His worker, Joel Seno, 19, was arrested in Compostela town in northern Cebu yesterday morning.

Seno told police that someone threatened to kill him if he did not stab Enriquez.

He said that someone was poking a knife at his side and telling him what to do.

SPO4 Jose Salingua Jr., investigator of the Danao City Police Station, said it appears Seno was mentally unstable.

Pity

He believes Seno was so hungry that he was beginning to imagine things.

Seno, who is originally from Puerto Mati in Cagayan de Oro City, said that he had asked Enriquez for shelter because he had not eaten for days.

He said he used to work in a poultry farm in one of the southern towns of Cebu and was not paid, prompting him to leave.

He said Enriquez took pity on him and hired him as a worker in the warehouse so he could eat and have a place to sleep. Enriquez sells charcoal.

That afternoon, Madonna Capul, Enriquez’s sister-in-law, found the businessman on the floor of the warehouse, full of stab wounds but still breathing.

He was rushed to the Danao District Hospital and then transferred to the Chong Hua Hospital in Cebu City, but he died minutes later. Danao is about 33 kilometers from Cebu City.

Police found a pair of red rubber slippers, a blue T-shirt and a 12-inch stainless steel knife with bloodstains.

Seno was arrested along the highway in Barangay Bagalngan, Compostela by the town police at 10 a.m. yesterday.

He was turned over to the Danao City Police Station yesterday afternoon.

Salingua said they will prepare a murder charge against Seno. He said the courts will determine if he needs psychiatric help.

Also, in Barangay Anapog, Catmon town in northern Cebu, a father hacked his son to death on the eve of the latter’s birthday.

Antonio Duran Obayan, 68, said his son Jelvin, 31, beat him up for missing a pre-birthday celebration.

Last Sunday, Jelvin had slaughtered a goat for his birthday celebration and was planning to slaughter a dog for that night. He had invited Antonio to join him that night. Because he had a headache, Antonio declined.

At 11:30 p.m., Jevlin was reportedly drunk when he arrived at his father’s house some 150 meters away. He reportedly complained why his father missed the party.

Jevlin then started kicking and hitting Antonio, who found it hard to evade the attacks.

Attack

Antonio later grabbed a bolo and attacked Jelvin. He said he forgot how many times he hacked Jelvin.

Jelvin managed to run but died upon reaching home.

Antonio said he did not know what came over him.

Antonio surrendered to Anapog Barangay Captain Limuel Camingawan, who turned him over to the police yesterday morning.

SPO3 Romulo Torralba, acting police chief of the Catmon Police Station, said they are preparing a parricide charge against Antonio, who is now detained at their detention cell. (MEA)
