Tuesday, October 03, 2006 Domingo, French champ. fight for WBF crown today
PHILIPPINE bantamweight champion Michael Domingo is fighting the most important bout of his career, a crack for the vacant World Boxing Foundation (WBF) bantamweight title against Frenchman Frederic Patrac today at the Palais des Sports in Agde, France.
Domingo, together with his manager Sammy Gello-ani and trainer Edmund Villamor arrived at Agde last Sunday from a 15-hour flight via Amsterdam.
Gello-ani is hoping that his ward would win this title as it would boost his fighter’s chances for bigger fights in the US.
“Basically, Domingo is in good shape, despite that 15-hour travel, he is ready and he is very confident,” Gello-ani said.
Domingo is on an eight-fight winning streak since joining the SGG Stable and training at the world-famous ALA Gym.
Domingo’s winning streak started after his back-to-back defeats for a regional belt. He first lost to Teerapong Distar for the IBF Pan Pacific 118-pound title on July 12, 2004 then to Poonsawat Kratingdaeng for the Pan-Asian Boxing Association bantamweight title on Oct. 26, 2004. Both defeats were by unanimous decision.
After those setbacks Domingo decided to transfer to the ALA Gym, fighting under Gello-ani, and started an unbeaten run. Domingo now holds a 26-14-3, record with 11 KOs.
Patrac has a similar story as he is also on a five-fight winning run since losing back-to-back fights for the European Boxing Union bantamweight title.
The French puncher is holding a 19-7-1 record with 10 KOs and is also the current French champion.
Patrac once held the EBU title after scoring a first round TKO win over Davie Gueralt in June 11, 2004 and made one successful title defense before losing to Simone Maludrottu. He tried to reclaim the title but he again lost to Carmelo Ballone on Feb. 25, 2005.
He won the French national title by beating Mustpha Benali on April 18, 2003 by TKO in the fifth round. (RCM)
