Tuesday, October 03, 2006 Dumoran finds ‘killer forehand’ to win Cesafi title By Marian C. Baring Sun.Star Correspondent
OSWALDO Dumoran Jr. of the University of the Visayas (UV) bounced back from a sloppy start to pull a backdoor victory over USJ-R's Jason Pinote, 0-6, 6-4, 10-6, and claim the Cesafi tennis title Sunday at the Alta Vista Tennis Courts.
After dropping the first set, Dumoran had to move heaven and earth to win the next two en route to winning the men's tertiary division title of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) event.
The momentum was on Pinote's favor after sailing through the first set, where he did not allow Dumoran, an Arafura Games gold medalist, to score a single point.
UV coach Fritz Tabura said Dumoran only needed to warm up before he found his stance.
"Sa second set na siya naulian," Tabura said. It was only in the second set where Dumoran's killer forehand was put to use, as he went to win the set, 6-4, to level the game with one set apiece.
Tight match
It was a tight match in the tie-breaker, as the two forced the game to five deadlocks before Dumoran broke free for good. At 5-all, Dumoran broke Pinote's serve to take the lead.
Dumoran, who had defeated Jedree Tan of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) in the semifinal round, is a sophomore at UV and was the country's top player in the Boys 18 years old and under.
Gold in Australia
In 2001, Dumoran and older brother James won a gold in the doubles event in the Arafura Games in Darwin, Australia.
In the ladies' class, USJ-R’s Benebett Patindol defended her crown as she completely overshadowed freshman and compatriot Jin Querubin, 6-2, 6-1.
Patindol was a member of the Cebu team, which bagged the tennis crown in last year's Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) in Pangasinan.
In the doubles event, USC teams outclassed their respective nemeses to bag the titles in both men's and women's classes.
Danreb Donio and Gerry Huyo-a grabbed the title after trouncing the UV pair of Jade Carba and Ian Yape, 6-2, 6-2, while Prisaa winners Rissa Alesa and Jane Idos defeated USJR's Jade Abangan and Genevie Gregorio. 6-1, 6-1.
High school
The high school competitions, on the other hand, saw the powerhouse USC team topping both girls and boys contests.
The boys' team is composed of feted age groupers Bernardine Niño Siso, Lowell Lloyd Cañete and the Cabahug twins Christian Paul and Christian John.
Taking second place is UV, composed of touted netters John Francis Largo, Larry Antigua and Cyril Camporedondo with neophyte John Ralph Roa.
In the distaff side, USC has Sallydine Siso, Kristel Mae Buenacosa and Kimberly Trager. Second placer UV is composed of Julie Ann Jopia, Tanya Jakosalem, Sheena Pavo and Mary Ann Miñoza.
