Tuesday, October 03, 2006 Swimmers reset 22 records By Marian C. Baring Sun.Star Correspondent
TWENTY-two swim records were shattered during last weekend’s Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) swimming competition at the Cebu City Sports Center Aquatic Center.
Loren Dale Echavez came up with the most impressive performance for the University of San Carlos (USC) as she broke four individual records and one with her team during the relay.
Three of the records erased was made by one of Cebu’s most celebrated swimmers Lynette Ang.
Apart from this, Echavez also eclipsed the oldest record in interschool swim meets, which is older than the Cesafi league itself.
Echavez smashed the nine-year-old record made by Ang in the 200-meter individual medley in 1997. Echavez established a new time to beat, as she clocked in 2:46.69, surpassing the 2:48.29 made by Ang.
Echavez bettered Ang’s 2000 records in the 100m freestyle, setting a new time of 2:46.69 and 1:05.70 in the 50m freestyle event.
The other new records inked by Echavez are in the 200m freestyle (2:26.36) and 400m freestyle relay (5:12.25) with her teammates Rozelle Diaz, Hozelyn Montecillo and Kristel Pacaña.
The 15-year-old was recently crowned the Most Valuable Player in the Milo Little Olympics.
Sister act
Ang’s younger sister Larisa and Echavez’ older sister Lorhiz share the next spot among the record breakers, as they reset two new records each in individual events.
Lorhiz, however, who shattered her own times, has etched two other new records from two team events.
Lorhiz had a time of 38.15 in the 50m breaststroke to eclipse her own record in 2002. She also made a new mark of 30.97 seconds in the 50m freestyle surpassing her 31.28 time also in 2002.
Her team Clanel Celerio, Kruzette Solijon and Ma. Agnes Larceña, pulled off a record-breaking finish in the 400m freestyle relay and 400m medley.
On the other hand, Larisa who single-handedly steered Velez College to second over-all in the Women’s collegiate event, broke the records in the 200m individual medley (2:55.79) and 50m back stroke (36.10).
USC’s Andre Ynclino also came up with the most number of record breaking finishes in the men’s side.
Ynclino finished the 200m individual medley in 2:58.56 shattering the record he registered last year by two seconds. He also established a new mark in the 200m freestyle with 2:17.53, eclipsing Israel Nuñal’s time in 2003.
Other records
The other tankers who came up with one new record each were UC’s Antonio Yana, Jr., Diane Cañeda and Paula Vega and USC’s Kruzette Solijon and Clanel Celero.
The USC Women’s team set four new records, while the USC Girls has two. University of San Jose-Recoletos girls team has one.
