Thursday, October 05, 2006 Cedf-it asks firms to use certification exam
THE private-sector led Cebu Educational Development Foundation for Information Technology (Cedf-it) has been negotiating with different companies and institutions that conduct certification examinations in information technology (IT) to recognize Cedf-it’s competency examination.
“The exam will identify who among our large pool of graduates have the necessary knowledge in IT for them to be directly employable. It will also try to identify the core IT knowledge needed for local employment in the Cebu IT industry,” Cedf-it senior adviser Fred Kintanar said.
The second Philippine IT General Certification Examination (Phil-IT GCE), which is a computer-based exam, was administered simultaneously to 114 IT graduates of six participating Cedfit-member universities and 28 others from the private sector last Sept. 30.
These member-schools include the University of San Carlos, University of Cebu, University of San Jose-Recoletos, Cebu Institute of Technology, University of Southern Philippines and University of the Visayas.
Measurement
The 100-question exam, which ran for two hours, is considered an “independent measurement of success,” Kintanar told Sun.Star Cebu.
Kintanar said the “uniqueness” of the exam lies on the focus on positions specifically required in the core knowledge of IT, like programming, software engineering jobs and skills needed in the actual working environment.
Cedf-it deputy director Maria Angelica Sederiosa reported that due to the exam’s “successful run,” they will soon tap other IT universities to encourage their respective students to take the next exam on February 2007. (MMM)
