Thursday, October 05, 2006 Seares: Soc, CICC & the skeptics By Pachico A. Seares News Sense
SKEPTICS abound. Two issues made doubters more restive this week.
One was the flip of three shooting "victims" of Talisay City Mayor Soc Fernandez's son. He didn't present Joavan. Instead, Soc waved complainants' "we desist" papers.
The other was architect Maning Guanzon's publicized "frustration" over doubts about Cebu International Convention Center (CICC).
People can understand dismay over being doubted. But the doubted must also appreciate the doubter.
In Soc's case, few believe the victims retracted because they genuinely realized they were wrong, but for fear or favor. Justice is never beyond tampering. And who's not doubted?
Even God was doubted. Gideon told an angel when Israelites were suffering, "If the Lord be with us, why then is all this befallen us? And where be all his miracles?" (Judges 6: 13)
What people see
As to CICC, people believe mostly what they see from where they see it. Who counts each beam, girder, or metal before judging CICC?
They look and what they see, with the sum of their experiences with contractors, tells them CICC might not be finished on time.
It's not Desdemonia's infidelity in Othello: "No hinge nor loop to hang a doubt on." Here, visual evidence supports the doubt.
Pretty much everyone has doubts. But doubts about CICC come with fear and hope for Cebu.
