Thursday, October 05, 2006 Chiongbian: The merry month of October By Edgar R. Chiongbian Teetime
Hello October. This is the time of the year when you know that you have only one more month to save money before the Christmas season comes along. It is also the month of Halloween, which means, all saints and all souls day are not too far behind.
For Cebu, we are looking forward to the Asean Summit that’s only 59 days away. So much anxiety, so much anticipation and everyone’s eyes on the International Convention Center; will it be finished on time?
Are we really going to get all the big benefits everyone is talking about when the summit is over? Or will this just make our Cebu grow faster and make our city old with a young body. What is really cooking with having a strong economy built on an international convention center? The answer may be a big payroll on law enforcement and security guards, and a city full of strangers. Sorry, just a devils point of view.
Do the numbers 25, 35, 50 and 75 mean anything to you? Well, maybe not but for His Eminence Ricardo J. Cardinal Vidal these numbers mean a whole lot of things this year. It’s his 25th year in Cebu, 35th year as a Bishop, 50th year as priest and 75th birthday. If you already knew the answer, you are very well informed.
And to celebrate these milestones, the friends of the Cardinal and members of Cebu Country Club are hosting a fund raising event at the end of this month with a golf tournament, to support the jubilee projects of Cardinal Vidal. The event is aptly called the Cardinal Vidal Jubilee Cup golf tournament.
The format of the tournament will be individual full handicap and will be held for two days but only one day to play.
There will be a guest and ladies division to accommodate everyone who wants to join.

This Saturday will be Tactical Operations Command (TOC) Anniversary golf tournament at Mactan Island GC. And get this: the awarding will be a Hawaiian inspired dinner party with the guys getting lei’d by the chipping green next to the newly built 10th hole tee house, which will be the center stage. These guys think of everything and what will they think of next. Maybe a Halloween party with real spooks. Credit goes to the very innovative MIGC chairman Jaime Viernes.
The Octoberfest at Casino Espanol last Saturday was a big winner. An all night bash for the members with unlimited spicy Bavarian hotdogs, sauerkrauts, grilled pork loins, etc and overflowing draft beers. All for free! And entertainment, yeah a very nice dancing band on the other side of the swimming pool. Can you ask for more?
Golf Tip: When to chip and when to putt near the fringe of the green. Chip when the fringe is tall and lush, and if the ball is sitting up. Chip when the hole is in the middle of the green. Chip when the greens are slow and bumpy to remove the uncertainty on how the ball will roll. Chip when the shot is a straight uphill and you can land the ball near the pin.
Putt when the grass is dried out or it is a hard pan. Putt when the turf or grass is firm because your iron will bounce at impact. Putt when you’re on a downhill slope or you have very little green to work with. Putt when the distance is less than 20 feet and, when the greens are firm and fast.
