Frenchman KOs Domingo in 9th

LADY Luck left Michael Domingo’s side during his bid to bring home the World Boxing Federation (WBF) bantamweight title at the Palais des Sports in Agde, France yesterday.

A wayward uppercut decked Domingo for good on the ninth round of a scheduled 12-round championship fight against French champion Frederic Patrac.

The loss snapped Domingo’s eight fight winning streak since joining the ALA Gym, and threw away his chances to fight in bigtime cards in the US.

The Philippine Bantamweight champion Domingo did just enough to hold the aggressive Patrac for eight rounds but suddenly found himself knocked out when Patrac connected an uppercut on the fateful ninth round.

“Domingo’s mistake was when he failed to be the aggressor. He just allowed Patrac to throw punches and he was just contented to do defense as what he always does,” promoter and boxing manager Sammy Gello-ani told Sun.Star Cebu on their way to the airport back to the country.

Hometown support

According to Gello-ani, Patrac who already enjoyed huge support from his hometown crowd, threw punches at will to keep Domingo on defense most of the time.

Domingo, who pulled back-to-back victories in a span of 13 days last July, was not hurt during the first eight rounds when Patrac was throwing different combinations of punches in trying to break the defense of the Sultan Kudarat fighter.

It was the same scenario in the ninth round when Patrac connected the decisive uppercut.

Patrac, the former European Boxing Union 118lbs champion, improved his ring record to 20-7-1, 11KOs win-loss-draw, and picked his sixth straight win, while Domingo dropped to 26-15-3, 11KOs.
