1M mangroves to grow in Cebu under campaign

A MILLION mangroves will be planted throughout the Cebu province, through the joint efforts of the provincial and local government units, companies, schools and the civil society.

The One Million Mangroves for Cebu is a social mobilization campaign that aims to help our coastal communities sustain the planting of mangrove propagules in designated mangroves nurseries and reforest identified mangrove areas within the province.

The project kicked off with the mangrove planting in Barangay Cotcot, Liloan on Sept. 7.

Volunteers

Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia spearheaded the activity.

The ceremony was followed by a weekend mangrove planting activity by students from Cebu International School and University of Cebu-Law Department.

A total of 5,200 mangroves were planted during the said activity.

With the Provincial Government taking the lead, the campaign organizers received pledges for mangrove planting activities in the municipalities of San Fernando, Carcar, Argao and Dalaguete.

Nurseries

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources 7 has recommended 38 possible mangrove plantation areas around Cebu, and at least six mangrove nurseries as sources of planting materials and propagules.

Funds

Under the program, seedlings and propagules are sold at P10 and P1, respectively.

Proceeds of the sales will be used for the planting materials and maintenance of the mangrove sites and nurseries, including the training of mangrove nursery technicians.

Last September, Banilad Town Center hosted the exhibit booth for all groups and individuals who were interested to participate in the project.
Organizers

Other groups and individuals interested to get involved in the activity may call the Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation Inc. at 233-6909 or send e-mail to ccef@mozcom.com.
