Friday, October 06, 2006 UC’s Villarete still dancing queen
Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) yesterday at the Elizabeth Mall Activity Center.
Analy Villarete remains the Cesafi queen of the dancefloor as she copped the title despite dancing with a new partner Jed Mahusay, while Ma. Ingrid Babiera and Joshua Cyrus Ortega of UC got the bronze medal. Southwestern University's Noreen Bacallan and Reguilon Cadamo take second place.
Fresh ideas
Villarete's expertise and Mahusay's fresh ideas when it comes to Latin dances were enough for the audience and adjudicators to look their way with their rendition of the jive, rumba, chachacha and samba.
The 20-year-old Villarete, a member of the UC dance troop, had been dancing for two years while Mahusay, a first year college student, only tried dancesport a few months ago.
Villarete, a graduating commerce student, topped last year's Cesafi with her partner Raymar Ruiz, who could not compete this year for failing to enroll, which is one of the requirements in the Cesafi.
University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) came uncontested in the high school division, as its dancers completed
a 1-2 finish. The petite Jushtel Kate Tabañag and her lanky partner Kenneth Earl Medrano won the gold, while their compatriots Nina Marikit and Jan Kristoffer Rodis took the silver.
Just 2 pairs
Only two pairs came out to compete in the high school division, while there were eight pairs in the collegiate level coming from USPF, UC, SWU, University of San Carlos and University of the Visayas.
The award winning performances of Danceport Team Cebu City members Jennifer Amahan and Rona Israel graced the tournament.
The pair had won the inaugural holding of dancesport in the Palarong Pambansa in 2004 and are fresh from successful stints in Singapore and Malaysia.
