Villanorma rules Talisay open hoops

VILLA NORMA annexed the Open division title of the 2006 Talisay Mayor’s Cup Basketball tournament after handing AAA a 79-67 beating Wednesday night at the Talisay City Sports Complex.

Von Harry Lanete sank six triples en route to scoring the game high 19 points, to lead the University of the Visayas Green Lancers-laden Villa Norma, which started strong on the onset and held the opposition’s rally on the final half to win the title.

Lanete, Jaysar Esperat, Khim Calo and Sam-Sam Gullas combined efforts to establish a 16-11 lead for Villa Norma. Michael Luga then led a 27-17 blitz that gave Villa Norma a 43-28 lead at the bend.

Under pressure

Eduardo Pening then helped AAA to stage a strong rally that brought the team close at 48-56, but Lanete again ignited a Villa Norma end game blitz, as AAA folded under pressure.

Luga finished with 16 points, while Esperat added 12 for Villa Norma. Joseph Guangco topped AAA with 16, Carlos Sayon Jr. added 14 and Pening finished with 10.
