Saturday, October 07, 2006 Blue Marlins aim to make waves in Dumaguete
A LEAN but mean Cebu Blue Marlins Swimming Club (CBM) plunges into action in the second stage of the Pilipinas Youth Swimming Club, which unwraps today in Dumaguete City.
The swim meet, which is sanctioned by the Philippine Amateur Swimming Association, is simultaneously held in the regional hubs, Rizal in Luzon and Zamboanga in Mindanao.
CBM recently came off a successful stint in Iligan City, where they came out the over-all champion. In the Dumaguete tournament, however, coach Lando Alvarez is gunning for individual honors since he brought a small delegation of eight swimmers.
Best bets
"These are my best bets in these divisions and I believe that they are the most competent in their age groups," said Alvarez, who added that he failed to bring more because of budget constraints.
Alvarez's team is still mostly made up of swimmers from the University of Cebu, who also had good runs in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) held last weekend at the Cebu City Sports Center.
Leading his list of topnotch tankers is Paula Abigail Vega, who will compete in the Girls 14 events. Vega had collected five gold medals in the Cesafi and reset one record in the 100m backstroke.
Palaro tankers
Alvarez is also banking on Andrew Dequiña, who will compete in the Open class, and Michael David Vega and Jeffrey Yana in the Boys 16 class.
Dequiña and Yana are Palarong Pambansa campaigners and had collared four golds each in last week's Cesafi. Noel Cañeda, who will compete in the boys 15, had three golds.
The other bets in the girls class are UC's Trina Cañeda (Girls 10) and Subangdaku Elementary School's Bethmay Arellano (Girls 9). While Bethany Christian School's Len Jon Cadavos (Boys 10) banners Cebu in the boys division.
The winners in the tournament will advance to the divisional meet. (MCB)
