CIS off to blazing start in ISAC volleyball

HOST Cebu International School opened its volleyball season on a high note as it stayed undefeated in the first day of the International Schools Athletic Conference yesterday.

The boys team, led by Michael Sharpe, Marco Asperas and Red Miguel, won its first three matches yesterday, while the girls team, with Presley Cunningham and Holly Dychangco also swept its first three games.

In the boys' side, CIS defeated Brent Manila, 25-19, 25-19 and walloped Mindanao International Christian Academy (Mica), 25-21, 25-12 before facing European IS.

CIS struggled early against EIS, as it trailed by as much as seven points. However, the team managed to regroup as it caught with the visitors for a thrilling, 26-24, 26-24 win.

Today, CIS will face Brent Subic and Southville in the final day of the elimination round.

Other members of the volleyball squad are Julien Esconde, Christian Buhisan, Kane Kim, Delvone Park, Lance Lee, Wayne Kim and David Kim.

After the first round, the top team will face the fourth-ranked team, while the second and third-best teams will duel with each other. The winners in both contest will battle for the crown.

In the Girls side, CIS defeated British School Manila, 25-21, 25-21, Brent Subic, 25-19 and 25-21 and Mica, 25-17 and 25-16.

In the first set against Mica, reception and miscommunication had CIS struggling to put up a lead, before Presley Cunningham bailed the team with her serves as they scored 10 straight points to overturn an 11-14 deficit to a 21-14 lead.

It was the same story in the second set as CIS took a 6-0 lead courtesy of Cunnigham for their easy win. Aside from the two, other members of the team are Gabby Mercado, Mia Arcenas, Julia Schroeder, Carol Yang, Cathy Wannamacher, Merilee Watson, Danica Ronquillo and Amy Asperas.

Today CIS will face Brent Manila, Brent Baguio and Southville. (ML)
