Letran Knights nip Webmasters, 81-71

NATIONAL Collegiate Athletic Association No.3 team, Collegio de San Juan de Letran needed clutch hits in the crucial period to oust University of Cebu, 81-71, yesterday in the elimination round of the 4th Collegiate Champions League at the Ateneo Blue Eagles gym in Quezon City.

Not even the absence of Boyet Bautista and Aaron Aban, who now plays in the PBA, could slow down the 16-time NCAA champion Knights, as Miko Quinday and RJ Jazul ably filled up the void by scoring a combined total of 29 points.

The Knights, the winningest team in the NCAA, will now face the winner between UAAP champion University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers and Jose Rizal University on Monday in the round of eight.

Straight baskets

Quinday scored two straight baskets and Jazul connected a triple to push the NCAA third placer, Knights, to a safer distance from the Cebu Schools Athletic Federation Inc. (Cesafi) fourth placers Webmasters, 68-56, with still 6:55 remaining in the game.

The Cebuanos, led by Jonathan Canceran, threatened for the last time at 53-58 on a fiery 13-6 run, but Quinday and Jazul rescued the Knights by stepping on the scoring pedal to give their team a safer lead.

Quinday topscored for the Knights with 16 points followed by Jazul with 13. Dino Daa made 10 points and four rebounds for the Knights, which out-rebounded the Webmasters, 50-35, and led in block shots, 6-2.

Canceran emerged as the Webmasters’ top man with 16 points and four assists, while Jeck Abatayo added 11 and two steals as UC bowed out of contention in the tourney.
