Siso sweeps Manila tilt

SALLYMAE Siso earned the first ticket to Malaysia after sweeping all her assignments in the selection round of the 2006 Milo Junior Tennis Cup national championships yesterday at the PRB Courts in Dapitan, Manila.

Siso, who is supported by Dunlop and Osaka Iridology, met little resistance from her finals match against Akiko de Guzman, winning 6-0, 6-1, to qualify for the Malaysia tilt for the third time.

Siso breezed through the qualifiers with an immaculate 3-0 winning slate, after beating Jessa Mae Mendoza and Crizabelle Paulino in the opening day.

Sally Mae’s older sister Sallydine, though, failed to duplicate her younger sibling’s feat, after losing to Linda Marie Santos of Palawan in their tie-breaker, 0-6, 6-2, 8-10, in the Girls 14-Under division.

Before their match-up, Sallydine and Santos, who are both first-time campaigners for Malaysia, stood on even terms with two wins apiece.

In the super tie-break, Santos overpowered Sallydine in taking an 8-6 lead before the latter broke Santos’ serve and rallied for two more points to level the match at 8-all.

Santos, however, scored two straight points to win.

Jacob Lagman of St. Benedict’s Learning Center is looking to ape his 6-1, 6-2 victory over Francis Derreck Alcantara Saturday night, as he battled Dheo Talatayod at press time yesterday for a slot in the Boys 12-Under division.

Meanwhile, Bernardine “Niño” Siso was also still trading strokes with Robert Ortellano of Cagayan de Oro at press time in a crucial match in the Boys 14-Under.

Manila’s Kim Saraza and Leander Lazaro, were also playing in the other game.

Niño currently holds a 1-1 win-loss slate after losing to Kim Ivor Saraza, 6-7 (1-7), 6-2, 8-1, last Saturday.

A victory by Saraza will earn him a ticket to Malaysia, while a loss will give Niño and Lazaro chances to take the berth as the three players will then be tied against each other.

Vince Mark Tabo-tabo, for his part, lost in the 10-Under Unisex division. (MCB)
