Wednesday, October 11, 2006 6 tankers qualify for nat’l meet
SIX tankers from the Cebu Blue Marlins booked a seat in the national finals of the Pilipinas Youth Swimming Cup after making their cut-off times during the second elimination phase last Sunday in Dumaguete City.
The national finals is tentatively set on Dec. 9 and 10 in Antique.
Bethmay Arellano, a student from the Subangdaku Elementary School, led the Cebu qualifiers as she made it into for four events in the Girls Nine-Under.
Arellano qualified for the 200 m butterfly, individual medley (IM), backstroke and breastroke. Five golds
Noel Cañeda, who bagged five gold medals and three silvers, and Lenijon Cadavos also qualified for three events in their categories.
Cañeda qualified for the Boys 15-Under from the 200m IM, 200m and 100m breaststroke.
Cañeda clocked 2:34:9 to beat the 2:40:40 mark in the IM, had almost 12 seconds to spare in the breastroke, and barely squeeze by in breaststroke, coming in just a second off the 1:22:40 mark.
Cadavos, on the other hand, had no problems advancing to the Boys 10-Under finals of the 200m IM, 400m freestyle and 200m breaststroke.
Cadavos came in at 23 seconds under the 3:46:30-mark in the medley, had 49 seconds to spare in the freestyle mark of 6:59:40, and also beat the 4:17:20 mark in breaststroke with a time of 3:55:13.
Trina Cañeda and Jeffrey Yana each qualified in two events.
Trina advanced to the Girls 14-Under 200m IM and breaststroke, while Yana qualified for the Boys 16-Under 100m butterfly and breaststroke.
Paula Abigail Vega also booked one seat after qualifying in the Girls 14-Under 100m free style.
The two-day tournament was participated by swimmers from Biniyaran Tadpoles Swim Club, Iloilo Sea Warriors , Francisco Guanco , La Union Bull Sharks Swim Club, Negros Pana-ad Swim Club, Siliman University Swim Club, Sta. Fe Swim Club and Oriental Negros Blue Dolphins. (JAF)
