Amok hacks neighbors’ pigs, goats, carabao, then shot dead

SIX pigs, five goats and one carabao were hacked to death by a bolo-wielding man, who was reportedly suffering from a nervous breakdown, in Barangay Villahermosa, Pilar town in the island of Camotes, Cebu.

The man identified by the police as Joseph Seberino Depas, 26, single, of Barangay Carabasan, Dulag town, Leyte, also died.
He was shot for allegedly attacking the responding police operatives.

Depas was a transient in Pilar and from time to time traveled back to his hometown.

Residents in Villahermosa were disturbed by the noises from the livestock at 10 a.m. Tuesday. They called for the assistance of the Pilar Police Station after spotting Depas, armed with a long bolo locally known as pinuti, striking the animals that came his way.

The pigs, goats and the carabao were owned by different residents in Villahermosa.

Insp. Danilo Delantar SPO3 Eleazar Arellano and PO3 Al Garciano rushed to the area and tried convincing Depas to yield.

Depas, however, allegedly attacked the policemen, forcing Garciano to shoot him in the legs and body.

He was taken to the Pilar Municipal Health Center but died on the way there.

Cebu Provincial Police Director Vicente Loot, in an interview with reporters yesterday, said that unless a complainant will show up and file a case against Garciano, the policeman will not be investigated for any liability.

Loot said the policemen were responding to a legitimate alarm. (JST)
