Figuracion-Torres pair ahead in Architect’s tilt

THE tandem of Waldo Figuracion and Paolo Torres soared atop the leaderboard in Level E-A of the men’s doubles event in the Architect’s Badminton Cup 2006 at the Racquet Zone Badminton Club at the Montebello Villa Hotel in Apas, Cebu City.

Figuracion and Torres snared the early leadership in their division after stringing together three straight wins in the event, which was sponsored by the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP)-Lapu-Lapu Chapter.

The Figuracion-Torres pair inked a winning total score of 93 points in taking care of the temporary lead although the Kim Taling-Arnold Arroyo, Globert Fernandez-Marlon Barino and Iben Bari-Lovel Cuizon pairings still has chances of catching up.

Cruised ahead

UAP-Lapu-Lapu’s Dave Valle and Jon Sagardui, for their part, seized the front position in Level E-B as they cruised ahead to a three-game winning roll with UAP-Sugbu Chapter’s tandem of Patrick Lendel Go and Walter Uy hot on their heels with a couple of wins.

In the Cebu Sports Media Association (CSMA) Badminton Cup, Erwin Lirazan and Rick Gabuya emerged as the toughest duo as they snared the championship title after beating the mighty twosome of Ronald Natulla and Lito Tecson, 31-27, in the rally-type format championship game.

Gabuya and Lirazan received the silver plate, a gold medal each and P3,000 cash.

“Teamwork was the key,” said Lirazan after he and Gabuya rallied from a 22-24 deficit to secure the win.

Natulla and Tecson settled for second and took home P1,500 cash and a silver medal each, while Allan Defensor and Jaime Frias salvaged the third spot and pocketed a bronze medal each. (JAF)
