Sherilin trips Cokaliong in Winners League cage

SHERILIN Plastics proved steadier in the endgame as it prevailed over Cokaliong Shipping Lines, 57-53, in a clash of unbeaten squads Friday in the 2006 Winners League basketball tournament at the City Sports Club Cebu gym.

In the other game, JV Shop N Shop downed the listless Castle Peak Hotel, 74-56, for its first victory in three games.

Jeremy Huang waxed hot in the deciding canto as he unleashed 12 of his game-high 23 points in the pivotal fourth-quarter run that propelled Sherilin Plastics to its third-straight win in as many games to snare the solo second place.

The loss, its first-ever in three games, pushed Cokaliong Shipping to third with a 2-1 card.

Both squads figured in a nip-and-tuck battle the entire game with neither leading by more than six points.

Racing to a 9-4 headstart, Cokaliong Shipping took control of the game most of the way and was in front for the last time at 44-42 before Norman Lopez sank a booming triple that sparked an 8-0 run for Sherilin, which overtook Cokaliong, 50-44.

Gallant stand

Cokaliong Shipping made one last gallant stand at crunchtime and was able to threaten at 53-54 on Gilbert Gajudo’s three-point play.

But Huang was simply too hot as he capped his endgame brilliance with a crucial shot, which gave Sherilin a 56-53 breather in the dying seconds.

Lopez added 11 points, all made in the second half, for Sherilin, which also had Erickson Ong, Richard Mercado, Jr. and Chester Go contributing a combined total of 19 points.

Gajudo topped Cokaliong Shipping with 22 points and 11 boards, while Alex Yeo chipped in 11markers, five rebounds, and five assists.

Cokaliong’s three-point sniper, Chester Cokaliong, had a sub-par performance a night after hitting 11 triples in their win over Global Carrier last Oct.8 as he was held off to only three triples to finish with 10 points, three rebounds and a steal.

Sherilin Plastics (57)- Huang 23, Lopez 11, Ong 7, Go 6, Mercado 6, Iway 2, Gaw 2. Cokaliong Shipping (53)- Gajudo 20, Yeo 11, Cokaliong 10, Huang 3, Cokaliong 3, Boholst 2, Mercado 2, Malixi 2.
