Writing: an important life-skill

IN THE 90’s a report by the US Labor Department said that most executives cited writing as one of the most neglected skills in the business world and yet one of the most important to productivity. In the same report executives noted that most future jobs will require writing skills, and so in a labor force full of mediocre writers someone who writes well is bound to stand out.

Business leaders now recognize writing as a mandatory skill for a successful career. Job applicants are evaluated on their application letter before getting down to their resume. With the fast–paced exchange of information succinct and well-written reports are more appreciated than ever.

In line with this, the Cebu International school faculty will be undergoing a writing seminar conducted by the East Asia Regional Council of International Schools on Oct. 19 entitled “The Essentials of Writing.” Specifically the workshop will explore effective responses to student writing. Participants will bring to the session a couple of samples of student writing that they would like to help students improve.

Students take time to realize the impact of writing. Through the correct teaching methods, strategies and motivational tools all students can be taught how to write well. It is important to instill in them the basic skills necessary from an early age. Cebu International School appreciates this and has taken a proactive part in developing students’ writing skills.

As early as preschool, five year olds are encouraged to write simple stories progressing on to the more difficult task of writing essays and position papers when they reach high school.

“Writing is a continuous process where students learn to refine and improve their skills throughout life. Our role is to provide the students with a love of writing and the skills to do it as well as possible:” says CIS superintendent Mark Bretherton.

As the former governor of West Virginia said, “In the end, communication makes (things) work, that’s why its important for schools and colleges to ensure that all graduates learn how to communicate clearly and concisely in paper.”

Cebu International School provides world-class education to over 20 nationalities in the only international school in the Visayas. One may visit www.cis.edu.ph for more details.
