City plans new access road

PLANS are afoot for the construction of a road connecting R. Landon Ext. to V. Rama Ave. through Barangay Sambag I, Cebu City.

An auxiliary road plan is expected to be finished before the month ends.

City Councilor Jose Daluz III said the Aznar family had agreed to donate a portion of their property for the road-right-of-way and promised to provide a lot for the affected families’ relocation.

“We already met with the Aznars, and they agreed to the request. Daghang squatters, but ni-offer sila nga ibalhin nila sa ilang yuta. Of course, ibaligya nila sa syudad through socialized housing (They offered to transfer them to a lot they would sell under a socialized housing scheme),” he said.

Ease traffic

Daluz heads the City Council committee on real property management.

He said the road opening is seen to ease traffic both in the downtown and midtown areas of the city, and provide motorists better access to Sambag I and the south district.

Request

But he has yet to present to the City Council a request for the program of works and estimates for the R. Landon-V.-Rama road project.

In an interview, Daluz said R. Landon will connect with V. Rama near the University of San Carlos-Girls High School campus.

The City sees no problem in the V. Rama side up to the river because it is vacant, as the Aznars have fenced off the property.

And although there are a lot of squatters in the Sambag II side, the Aznars are willing to sell another portion of their property to the City as relocation site, the councilor said.

Relocation

But he has yet to know by how much City Hall pays for the property of the Aznars for the relocation site.

He said that although narrow, with just a three-meter width, R. Landon Ext., which is beside the Cebu City Sports Center main gate, will do for now.

Widen

“Ang importante masumpay ang dalan, naay bag-ong kaagi-an (What is important is that the two roads get connected. The City will just improve it (R. Landon later),” Daluz said.

Another road project Daluz successfully negotiated was the purchase of a 1,304-square-meter lot in Barangay Calamba.

In its session last Oct. 4, the City Council set aside P3.59 million to pay the heirs of Wilfredo Saceda for their property to widen the road opening of Katipunan St. from its junction with A. Lopez St. to V. Rama.

The council foresaw better traffic flow once the property is purchased, and the structures demolished, so the access road could be constructed. (RHM)
