Aboitiz 12-under starts Saturday

AFTER figuring in festival type tournaments, the young footballers of Cebu will get to experience real football when the Aboitiz Boys 12-Under Cup kicks off this Saturday at the Sacred Heart School-Jesuit boys.

Age group powerhouse Paref-Springdale and Don Bosco College, which won the Palarong Pambansa title this year, are expected to renew their rivalry on the field, while other schools are expected to spring a surprise or two.

Unlike in the football festivals, the Aboitiz Cup will offer 11-a-side competition with 25-minute halves.

Preparation

“This (Aboitiz Cup) will be in preparation for the Cebu City Olympics,” said Cebu Football Association president Jonathan Maximo.

Aside from the two traditional powerhouses, other teams expected to suit up for the tournament are Cebu International School, Bright Academy, which won the San Roque Football Fiesta crown, FC Inter Lapu-Lapu, Pepito FC, University of San Carlos, SHS-J and the Center for International Education.

Maximo will meet with the coaches for the draw on Tuesday at Sideline.

Two weeks after the Boys 12 Cup, the Players 10 Cup will kick off, also at SHS-J, while the CebuFA will be reserving Sundays for the Men’s Open, which will either be played at the San Roque Parish grounds or at the University of San Carlos grounds.

“The Cebu City Sports Center field is being renovated, so we can’t use that,” said Maximo. (ML)
