Cokaliong Shipping back on win column
By Jade S. Violeta

COKALIONG Shipping Lines bounced back from their frustrating loss the other day as they trounced archrival JV Shop N Shop, 83-72, yesterday in the opening game of the 2006 Winners League basketball tournament at the City Sports Club Cebu gym.

A day after absorbing a 53-57 debacle at the hands of Sherilin Plastics, Cokaliong Shipping promptly made their way back into the win column for their third win in four outings as team owner Chester Cokaliong recovered his range from the outside after a so-so performance the other day.

Cokaliong conked in a total of 30 points peppered with seven treys, two rebounds, three assists and one block to lead his squad to victory, while Gilbert Gajudo added a double-double performance of 21 markers and 11 boards.

Cokaliong Shipping, which nearly squandered a 16-point second quarter lead, also drew stellar performances from Jack Huang, who registered 16 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and one block and Christopher Cokaliong, who inked only seven points but hauled down 11 rebounds.

The Shippers came out as the hungrier team in the game as they immediately took control at the end of the opening quarter, 18-15, and later widened this to a 46-37 wall at the bend.

JV Shop N Shop tried to play a catch-up game in the penultimate canto but failed as Cokaliong Shipping simply matched them basket-for-basket in the entire period to retain the nine-point edge going into the final quarter.

The same story unfolded in the deciding phase with JV Shop N Shop firing at will and Cokaliong responding immediately to preserve the win.

In the second game, Global Carrier won by forfeiture over Castle Peak, while Worldwide Steel cemented their hold of the top spot with their fourth-straight win via a 65-51 bashing of Sherilin Plastics in the main game.

Cokaliong Shipping (83)- Cokaliong 30, Gajudo 21, Huang 16, Cokaliong 7, Yeo 5, Malixi 2, Sarmienta 2. JV Shop N Shop (72)- So 21, Uy 21, Gabasa 11, Sy 10, Olvido 5, Sy 4.

Worldwide Steel (65)- Hing 13, Razon 10, Po 8, Huang 8, Sy 8, Walter Ong 7, Kent Ong 6, Cabatana 5. Sherilin Plastics (51)- Lopez 21, Mercado 11, Ong 5, Gaw 5, Go 5, Yap 4.
