Wednesday, October 18, 2006 Speak out: Entry of call centers By Mark M. Coliflores AB Mass Communication, SWU
If you ask people, especially those who just graduated, what is “in” when it comes to high-paying and cool jobs, they won't have second thoughts in telling you, "call centers are the best!"
Call centers have indeed attracted a number of job seekers. It's a 24-hour phone-operating service offered by big international companies to their respective clients.
But what about the pros and cons?
Call centers may pay well, but what about working all night long? That needs a change in one’s time clock, as typical Filipinos work by day and rest at night. Aside from the employees’ nocturnal existence, their pressure points are also triggered by the job. They become pawns of the 8-hour shift.
But still call center attract people considering the large number of new entrants in the labor market each year.
Before these firms’ entry here, young workers find it difficult to look for employment, and harder still get high-paying, secure and safe jobs.
Call centers therefore give new graduates hope in this void of financial woes.
