Friday, October 20, 2006 Emergency’s 11th Anniversary
BEST known for its public service and public safety awareness campaigns and missions, Emergency, in celebration of its 11th anniversary this Friday, features the different missions that the program has recently spearheaded in different danger-prone communities.
Barangay Malaban in Biñan, Laguna is often regarded as “Barangay Bulate” primarily because 94 percent of the children residing here are suffering from worms. Only last year, Emergency has launched a de-worming campaign in the said barangay but, sadly, the campaign was not able to put an end to the problem.
One of the major reasons being cited is the absence of decent comfort rooms in the residents’ houses. Furthermore, Barangay Malaban is also prone to floods.
And to finally put an end to the residents’ worm condition, Emergency with the help of some concerned groups, had a number of comfort rooms built, and has also arranged for the construction of a bridge!
The Cavite Center for Mental Health, on the other hand, undeniably lacks the proper facilities to accommodate its about 480 patients.
Aside from not having sufficient rooms, the hospital also doesn’t have an infirmary. And under these conditions, mentally-ill patients are also now suffering from skin diseases! Emergency, again in coordination with some groups, is having an additional hospital clinic built.
Emergency will also visit some of the communities that still bear the scars brought by the recent typhoons. One of these is Calamba, where evacuation centers are still filled with evacuees of typhoon Milenyo. Another is Barangay Sta. Ana in Taytay, which greatly suffered from typhoon Neneng.
To help the residents in the said communities, Emergency organized a rehabilitation effort in both Calamba and Taytay.
