Friday, October 20, 2006 Cesafi clarifies report on having over-all champion
THE Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) clarified that the premier sporting meet does not have a concept of an over-all champion, contrary to reports that came out in another paper (not Sun.Star Cebu).
"We do not have an overall winner. What we do have are over-all winners per event," Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy said.
The report said University of Cebu, having won the most number of medals, was named as the over-all winner of Cesafi. Soon, perhaps
"It is from their own estimate. But we do not recognize an over-all champion for this league. It has never been introduced in the Cesafi yet. Maybe soon," Tiukinhoy said.
UC athletic director Bernard Ricablanca said that although he beams with pride with the school's accomplishment, he felt that it would be unfair to claim being an overall champion in a league that does not have that format.
"It (medal standing and overall title) was suggested, but never approved. It is not fair because not all schools join as many events," Ricablanca said.
Meanwhile, the Cesafi heads, tournament managers and athletic directors from the Cesafi member schools, met Wednesday night to assess this year's meet and cooked up ideas to improve the 2007 season. On top of the program was to amend some rules and regulations of the league.
Rulebook
Tiukinhoy said that it was agreed that there will be a separate rulebook for basketball and other events. Each event will formulate its own ground rules on technicality.
"As of the moment, we are making use of the basketball rules and regulations. We will deviate from that and let the experts in each event make their own rules," Tiukinhoy said.
He added that this way, it will be easier to decide when conflicts arise.
The tournament heads were tasked to formulate their rules and are asked to submit these by the next meeting on Nov. 15, where the commissioners will study it before endorsing it to the board.
Meanwhile, the tournament managers were also made to prepare expenses and budget reports for their events.
Recommendations
This is in line with Tiukinhoy's recommendation to charge the schools the amount that is commensurate to the expenses that an event incurs, so that an event could function on its own, without having to go through the hassles of processing their budget requests.
"We will look at the expenses of each event incurred this year, then divide it with the number of teams that will join so that we will get the initial fee that we would ask for," Tiukinhoy said.
As of the moment, each school is asked to pay only P1,000 registration fee in every event it joins. (MCB)
