Balamban ahead in Unity Cup tilt

BALAMBAN took the helm of the Women’s Cluster III action in the Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Cup volleyball tournament after registering the most number of wins yesterday in Toledo City.

The Balamban spikers tallied straight-sets victories over Barili, 25-13, 25-17, and Aloguinsan, 25-20, 25-22, to overshadow defending champion Toledo’s opening day feat.

Toledo only had one victory yesterday, although an emphatic one, as the team barely broke sweat when it trounced Tuburan, 25-6, 25-19.

Another obstacle, though, was added to Toledo’s bid for another title with the participation of the Asturias team, which formalized its entry to the tournament only last Monday.

Instead of five teams, there will now be six squads battling for the cluster title, the P20,000 top purse and the chance to join the winners’ circle that will be competing for the overall crown and the P100,000 cash prize.

Asturias’ maiden game, though, did not go too well as it lost to Aloguinsan, 12-25 and 10-25, and later received another beating against Barili.

Asturias fought hard versus Barili before bowing to the latter in three grueling sets, 25-21, 22-25 and 20-25.

The victory evened Barili’s win-loss record to 1-1 after losing to Balamban in its first game. (MCB)
