Sunday, October 22, 2006 Chiongbian: Yellow paint everywhere By Edgar R. Chiongbian Teetime
How about a quick question? Was there a great big giveaway sale on yellow paint and that’s what we see splattered all over the city?
I have never seen so much yellow paint in my life. Does that make it mellow yellow? Nah more like stress-o-yellow!
Yellow paint is supposed to be the color to warn you that there is impending danger along your way. In fact, this is the way a company, city or person cannot be sued when somebody gets hurt because you have already been forewarned.
When you look at the sidewalks, there’s no way you can walk straight without bumping into any one of the yellow painted obstructions unless you zig and zag. Let’s assume that there’s not much we can do about it now but doesn’t this highlight what is wrong instead of what’s right in our city.
We are supposed to beautify the city but instead we are making it look a lot like Christmas with decorations using only yellow trimmings. Wouldn’t it be okay to leave the telephone poles alone and maybe try some white paint on the other stuff?
Besides if you bump into these huge telephone poles, you surely deserve it because you must have had your eyes closed.
While I am on the subject about our city, I would also like to mention Citom, the traffic management organization for Cebu, just like Tedman is for Mandaue city.
The city government is considering arming them with guns. Have guns will travel. I thought these guys were traffic enforcers not policemen.
Ah that is the problem. Instead of guiding the traffic, they are hiding to catch the violators and then create a big traffic jam in the process.
Citom already has the most powerful armament in their hands. The most dreaded, most feared- violation’s ticket. It can get your driver’s license suspended and your vehicle impounded, and definitely will hurt you in the pocket.
Filipinos are not afraid of guns; when you show them a gun, they get aggressive.
But if you show them a violations ticket, they will cry. But for those who won’t cry, the latest idea of the mayor to supply Citom with tear gas will surely do the trick and surely cause tears to start flowing.
Fellow Rotarians the “Rotary Fun Golf Tournament for Charity” is this Friday, Oct. 27 at Mactan Island GC to benefit the Autistic Indigent Children Scholars of Reach Center Cebu. The format is individual and team play using the System 36 for both categories. The tournament is open to Rotarians and non-Rotarians in the individual play but only Rotary Clubs in team play.
Four players per team, three to count. There will be an A, B, C, and ladies divisions in the individual play and three winners in the team play.
The Rotary Clubs can field as many teams as they would like. A hole-in-one prize of P50,000 has been put on all par 3’s but will be divided by the winners if there is more than one.
The awarding dinner will be at the MIGC clubhouse at 6:30 pm. Registration is P1,500 for individual, plus P500 fee per team. Contact Rotary Club of Cebu Fuente for pre-registration, flight assignments and tee times.
Come to think of it, there will be three awarding dinners on Oct.27th. The Cardinal Vidal Jubilee Cup at Cebu Country Club, the Ateneo fellowship & awarding at City Sport Club and the Rotary Fun Golf awarding at MIGC.
If you’re involved in the three events, you must be a holy true blue Rotarian.
Golf Tip: Too much shoulder turn, especially with the irons at the beginning of the swing or an aggressive weight swift as you come down will put the club on the wrong path, leading to pull or slice shots.
The shoulders are suppose to turn but if you are too concerned with rotation, they will pull the club too far inside at the start.
So instead of trying to turn the shoulders as your first move, focus on taking the club straight back and up with the arms.
Make sure to maintain the correct path by keeping the clubhead outside the hands until the shaft is parallel to the ground and the shoulders will be where they should be.
